This was a bit expensive for us, especially as it is a hostel and a bit out of town (20 min walk), but it was actually very nice indeed. The superb onsen was absolutely lovely with sea view, there was a nice reception, the shared lounge was enormous with amazing view and there was easy parking. We had a nice meal out at a friendly (recommended) local restaurant. Shiretoke is a truly beautiful nature reserve and well worth a visit. We were happy we stayed here.

Lovely hotel, very comfortable and well equiped but there is no restaurant on site and also very few open in the town at night during the period we stayed so you need to bring your own food

The view from the hotel room is just awesome. Unfortunately, we did not manage to see sunset as all the 3 days were cloudy when we were there. Certainly it will be easier if have own transport.

It is a nice property with outstanding views of the port. The bedroom was clean, comfortable, and ample for Japan standards. The staff is courteous and the pristine shared kitchen works well. In case you aren’t driving, note that it isn’t quite walking distance from downtown. Btw the GPS took me to a wrong address, by the port; actually the hotel is at the top of the hill. I totally recommend it.

Clean and quiet

Walls are thin. If you stay on the same floor with family with kids, then you can and will hear small children scream, cry or run throughout the nights. Not hotel’s fault but you cant escape those noisy issues.

Lovely shared spaces (living room, cooking area, onsen) at this hotel. In walking distance to good restaurants for dinner. Was glad to have some groceries since there was not much to eat for breakfast in town.
Utoro “ hostel”

The hotel is on top of a hill and overlooks the harbor. Utoro is not a pretty place but the hotel is operated like a hostel with cooking facilities on the 1st level. Room was spacey but did not have a bathroom. Tge “onzen” on the 1st level had to be used.

Comfortable room with a wonderful view of the port area. Not as quiet as I would have liked (the people above me were noisy, and when a room next door turned on their water, you could hear it loudly). Fortunately everything went quiet after 10pm. Sleeping late is not really possible, as when all those guests wake up the next morning, all the noise resumes. If you’re getting up reasonably early anyway, it’s not that big of a deal. Still, after so many nights in other properties that were dead silent, this was a bit disappointing.
Ok for a room for the night

We stayed one night. The advertised breakfast and restaurant was not available/closed. The hotel is very dated. The room and onsen were clean and tidy. There was only one visible member of staff, who was pleasant, but the place felt deserted. It has a decent view.
Pleasant hotel with a nice view of town and sea

Room was clean and cosy. No bathrooms in room; only an onsen on the ground floor. Have to pay for entrance into onsen which was stupid since it's the only place for guests to bathe at - in other words, unavoidable extra expenses. Otherwise it was a pleasant enough stay, especially with the view and the breeze coming in through the Windows.
Good value for the views, but past it's prime

Great views, nice rooms, but slightly run down from a grander past. Very comfortable, but no restaurant / breakfast option and a little hike up the hill from town centre.

Nice hotel on a hill

Room was generally clean. hotel is located up a hill which is no issue if u drive. Wifi works well. Onsen is clean. Room is large and offers view of sunset.
Great view of the sea

This hotel was located at the mid of the hill. There should be transportation available if you need it otherwise driving will be quite suitable. We booked the Japanese style room and the view to the sea was superb. There is a bathroom in the room. However showering/ bathing we got to go to public bath. In the public bath there is both indoor and outdoor for ladies.
Great view of the sunset

The room we rented (twin beds, run of the house) was spacious and nice. It afforded a great view of the pier and the sunset! The only disadvantage was that there was no private or shared bathroom - there was only an onsen. The onsen also had a great view of the sunset, but is a public one and can't be locked. Depends on whether you like that!
Misleading pictures and description - beware!

About the hotel It is absolutely no ryokan but rather a huge resort with a dining hall for 200+ people, an onsen for 150+ people, an arcade games room, several shops inside the hotel, etc. It also seems that the hotel recently merged with sister hotel Wings which is just next door. Hotel room We were misled by the good reviews which referred to the main hotel. Unaware of the difference between the main and the sister hotel, we ended up in the “Wings” hotel where rooms could definitely use some refurbishment and renovation. Description mentions traditional furniture. Nice way to describe worn out furniture from the 1990s. Bathroom was tiny and the oldest we have seen over our 2 weeks of traveling in Hokkaido. TV had no internet connection and had even no HDMI port. The “Mountain View” was also an absolute joke. View was first on the parking lot, then the fire escape stairwell and yes you could see one ski slope in the background. Food Misled by the word ryokan we expected a dining experience of high quality with local ingredients and attentive service. Well nope. Dinner and breakfast is buffet style, where you have to hand in a ticket when you arrive. You are then escorted to your table and are free to choose between Japanese, Chinese, or Western cuisine. While options are not lacking, taste and freshness was however sadly missing. Overall it was a very disappointing experience and if in the area, we would recommend La Vista Akangawa hotel instead
